Anubias nana – Anubias barteri var. nana

The most shade-tolerant aquarium plant — compact dark green leaves on driftwood or rock, no CO2, goldfish-safe, the premier shrimp plant. Natural companion to Java Fern.

⚠️ Critical: Never bury the rhizome in substrate. Attach to driftwood or rock with the rhizome fully exposed to water. Buried rhizome = rot = dead plant within 2–4 weeks.

🍃 The Premier Shrimp and Nano Plant

Anubias nana's slow-growing waxy leaves accumulate biofilm — the microorganism layer that shrimp graze in the wild. Neocaridina and Caridina shrimp spend more time on Anubias leaves than almost any other surface. For goldfish tanks where every other plant is eaten, Anubias nana survives. For nano tanks where Java Fern is too large, Anubias nana is the right scale.

Classic combination: Anubias nana (foreground) + Java Fern (background) on the same driftwood piece. Two rhizome plants, same care, contrasting leaf size and shape — the most natural-looking low-tech planted tank combination available.
