🐟 About the Copper Smaragdina

Betta smaragdina — the Emerald Betta — is native to rice paddies and slow streams in northeastern Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. The Copper form displays a warm, burnished copper-gold metallic iridescence with blue-green scale edging — complex and shifting, moving between copper, rose-gold, bronze and teal depending on light angle.

Crucially, B. smaragdina is a paternal mouthbrooder. After spawning, the male collects all eggs into his mouth and broods them for 10–14 days, releasing fully-formed free-swimming fry — a completely different and more intimate breeding experience than bubblenest species.

For intermediate+ hobbyists: The Copper Smaragdina is best suited to experienced wild betta keepers who understand species-specific care and mouthbrooding biology. Beginners are encouraged to start with the Mahachai wild betta series before progressing to this species.

Why Collect the Copper Smaragdina?

  • Unique colour: Copper-gold iridescence shifting to teal and bronze — no other betta in India looks like this species in copper form.
  • Mouthbrooding biology: Watching a male hold and care for his fry for 10–14 days is one of the most extraordinary experiences in freshwater fishkeeping.
  • Strong hardy fry: Mouthbrooding produces 20–50 large, fully-developed fry at release — extremely high survival rate versus bubblenest fry.
  • Rare in India: Genuine quality Smaragdina are extremely difficult to source from reliable Indian suppliers — availability is limited.
  • Colour deepens: Copper iridescence intensifies significantly over 3–6 months with Artemia and Daphnia conditioning.

🍽 Live Foods for Copper Colour

  • Daphnia / Moina — carotenoids support blue-green scale edge contrast — feed 3–4x weekly
