⚠️ Divide the pot before planting. One pot planted as a single clump = one small patch. One pot divided into 10 clumps planted 2–3cm apart = 20×15cm carpet in 6–8 weeks. Division is the essential step.
🌿 The Three Carpet Rules
Divide into 8–12 clumps: Rinse mineral wool, separate root mass, plant each clump 2–3cm apart in a grid.
Adequate light at substrate: Hairgrass needs more light than Anubias or Java Fern to carpet; 30+ PAR at substrate level.
Trim at 5–6cm: First trim redirects growth from vertical blades to horizontal runners — carpet thickens dramatically after first trim.
Best companions: Neocaridina Cherry Shrimp or Amano Shrimp graze algae from hairgrass blades continuously — the most effective biological maintenance for a hairgrass carpet. Small tetras (Neon, Ember, Cardinal) as mid-water schooling fish above the carpet.
