Hockey Stick Tetra – Thayeria boehlkei

Bold black hockey-stick stripe, distinctive head-up posture, very active mid-water schooling fish. Also known as Penguin Tetra or Blackline Penguin Fish. Order 3 pairs minimum.

⚠️ Head-up posture is normal. Hockey Stick Tetras naturally swim nose-upward at 30–45° — this is a species characteristic, not illness. Also: cover the tank — moderate jumper when startled.

🐟 What Makes This Fish Special

  • Bold graphic pattern: Black hockey-stick stripe visible from across the room at any angle.
  • Unique posture: Head-up angled swimming — instantly identifiable silhouette unlike any other tetra.
  • Maximum activity: Fills mid-water with constant schooling motion — the most active common tetra.
  • Moderate caution: Can nip fins of slow long-finned fish in small groups; solve with school of 8+.
Dark substrate: The black hockey-stick stripe is at maximum contrast and visibility against dark sand. White or light substrates significantly reduce the visual impact of this fish.
