Why can't I plant Java Fern in substrate?

When the rhizome is buried in substrate, it is deprived of oxygen, the tissue begins to rot, and the rot progresses back through the rhizome toward the plant's growing point within 2–3 weeks. The entire plant dies from the rhizome outward. Always attach Java Fern to a surface (driftwood, rock, a suction cup) with the rhizome above the substrate line.
