Java Fern – Microsorum pteropus

The most forgiving aquarium plant — low light, no CO2, attaches to driftwood, goldfish-safe, self-propagating. The correct choice for almost every aquarium type.

⚠️ Critical: Never bury the rhizome in substrate. Java Fern must be attached to driftwood or rock with the rhizome above the substrate. Burying the rhizome causes rot and kills the plant within 2–3 weeks.

🌱 Why Java Fern Works Everywhere

Java Fern tolerates conditions that kill other plants: low light, no CO2, hard water, soft water, temperatures from 18–30°C. It survives in goldfish tanks and cichlid tanks that destroy every other plant. It thrives in shrimp tanks where biofilm on its textured leaves provides continuous grazing. It self-propagates for free. It requires almost no maintenance once attached to hardscape.

Attachment methods: Super glue gel (fastest and most reliable) — apply thin bead to rhizome, press to driftwood for 30 seconds. Cotton thread — wrap around rhizome and driftwood; dissolves in 4–6 weeks by which time plant is attached naturally. Both methods are completely fish-safe.
